Meet Your Meat

Okay, so I know this isn't about art or anything but I had to post something about it because it has absolutely changed the way I will eat for the rest of my life.

I just saw a video online about the farming industry and the inhumane treatment of animals on goveg.com entitled: Meet Your Meat. It was AWFUL! I am a meat-eater and I heard that some of the animals were mistreated, but I never thought that it was a common practice, let alone industry standard! If you choose to watch it (if you eat meat I think you really should) please beware that what you will watch is truly gruesome. That being said it is essential that everyone who eats meat knows what is happening in the meat industry.

I know what you're thinking if you are a fellow meat-eater. "It can't be that bad." or "I'm sure those are only isolated incidents." Well, after watching that video you won't think that anymore. Take it from me. I used to think those horror stories were just minor incidents blown out of proportion by organizations like PETA, but that isn't the case. These stories are the harsh reality.

After Dana and I watched the video we decided to adopt a primarily vegetarian diet. I say primarily because I looked into humane farming online and there are farms out there that do follow strict humane guidelines in their farming practices. Those guidelines are designed to protect the animals from birth through slaughter. There is a lot of information available on what "humane treatment" means exactly. After looking it over I would feel comfortable consuming meat occasionally, but only if I personally researched where it was coming from and how the animals are routinely treated. That's just my decision. I believe that everyone is entitled to decide for themselves what is right for them. I just don't think that any compassionate human being can support the factory-style farming industry after seeing what I saw the other night.

Sorry if this comes off as being preachy or depressing. I just felt like I had to inform everyone I know. I hope this strikes a chord with you too.

Yay! New Followers!!!

Hey everyone! I just wanna say thanks to the new people for choosing to follow my inane ramblings.

Now...just to bring you all up to speed:

1.) I got a job. Yay!

2.) I was accepted to grad school!! SWEET! (not to the most prestigious school on my list, but a good school nonetheless)

3.) I'm making headway with the wedding plans. Also very cool. (Dana is awesome and is helping me every step of the way)

4.) I'm not painting nearly as much as I should. Boo. (I've done a couple of things and I started something new, but if I'm being honest I'm still dragging my feet)

Whew! That's been my past couple of months. As for the whole art thing I will post one of the little paintings I've done recently very soon. I wish I had a good excuse, but I'm just lazy. I'm trying to give myself a good kick in the ass to get the creative juices flowing again. Don't worry though, I may slow down from time to time, but I'll never throw in the towel.

That's it for now but I'll post again soon, and I'll stop being such a lazy ass. Cross my heart.

New Painting

Inspired by the portrait by Ms. Gale to the right. You likey? I like the idea of painting on a gray scale, but I am thinking about bringing in spots of color. Meh, just a thought.

As for the other self portrait, I'm shelving it for a little while. I became frustrated and I just need to work on new things right now until I can come back to it.

By the way, the reason I do so many self portraits is due to lack of willing, available models. As much as I like making serial-killer-face in a mirror and painting what I see, I would really prefer a fresh face. Any takers?

So, I Haven't Been Writing or Painting Because...

Well first, there was Valentine's day. It was awesome, just in case you were wondering.

Second, Dana's youth orchestra kids had a concert on Sunday so I went to that.

Finally, Dana and I got really DISGUSTINGLY sick together and we are both still recovering. When I say disgusting, I mean gross. REALLY GROSS. We don't know whether or not it was food poisoning or the stomach flu. That should give you some idea as to what we were dealing with here. If that wasn't bad enough, once the gross part was over neither one of us could stand up and our bodies hurt from head to toe. Ouch.

In an odd way it was a bonding experience. Think about it. Once you're sick with someone in the way you hope no person will ever bear witness to, they've seen you at your worst. If they still love you and find you attractive after that, that's TRUE LOVE, baby! Example: After I had just relinquished my dinner from the night before to the porcelain god and crawled my way back to bed, Dana looked at me and said:

"How inappropriate is it that I still think you look sexy right now?"

I replied:

"I don't believe you, but bless your heart."
